Gillian Margot, gifted with an exquisite voice and an exceptional understanding of the jazz idiom, is known for the impact she continues to have on the Canadian jazz scene. Her authentic sound and creatively modern approach to music make for unforgettable performances.
Margot graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts double major in Music and Anthropology from York University, where she studied with multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson (George Shearing, John Handy Quintet), renowned conductor and arranger John Gittins (Oscar Peterson), and the late Bobby Fenton (Time Warp, Forth Inversion). While at York, she twice received the Ella Fitzgerald Award and Scholarship for excellence in jazz and she performed extensively with Canada's acclaimed Afro-centric choir The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, with whom she still occasionally tours.
Determined to develop her own project, Margot took her jazz trio to Australia and Hong Kong. In 2007, Margot was awarded the Chalmers Professional Development Grant by the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed her to study closely for two years with legendary accompanist and artistic director Norman Simmons (Carmen McRae, Joe Williams) in New York. She has also studied with vocalists Carol Welsman, Kevin Mahogany, Freddy Cole, and Carol Baggot-Forte.
Gillian Margot's diversified performance experience has enabled her to perform at venues such as Glenn Gould Studio, Roy Thomson Hall, Calgary's Epcor Centre, The Rex Hotel and Hugh's Room in Toronto, Jazz at The Up-Over in Brooklyn, Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase in Chicago, The Guelph Jazz Festival, The Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival, Lula Lounge, Revival, the Waterloo Entertainment Centre, and the Edmonton Winspear Centre. Margot has recorded or performed with famed soprano Kathleen Battle, conductor Wayne Marshall, singer/songwriter Peter Bloom, live bands: Grooveyard, Kelly & The Kelly Girls, Duke & The Dell-ites, Juno award winners Joe Sealy, Paul Novotny, Michael Occhipinti and Paul Neufeld, pianist and CBC radio host Andrew Craig, singer/songwriter Serena Ryder, world renowned pianist Benny Green, and the Strickland Brothers Quintet in New York. She has also had the rare opportunity to perform for guests such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Peter Gabriel, the Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, and the late and great Oscar Peterson.

In November 2010, the Gillian Margot Trio (a.k.a. GMT) released their debut CD, "A Pink-filled Sky," to a full house at Toronto's esteemed, Hugh's Room.
"The Gillian Margot Trio reflects a welcome paradigm shift in modern music. Their sound seems to cast off the stereotypical the old boys club approach to jazz, while embracing the essence of music - humanity."
